  1. Glass Blown Open Week!

    April 24, 2017 - April 29, 2017, All Day @ Emporia Country Club; Jones Park East; Jones Park West; Emporia Municipal Golf Course; Peter Pan Park; and Eagle DGC at Olpe Lake.

    Eleven hundred disc golf players from around the world as well as family, friends, and volunteers will be in Emporia to compete in the Glass Blown Open disc golf tournament. Come downtown on Saturday, April 29, 6:00pm – 11:00pm for the GBO Block Party located at the 700 and 800 block. Chat with players, visit vendor booths and see all things disc golf.

    Join Radius Brewing Company to kick-off the Glass Blown Open and Kansas Craft Beer Week! Visit with reps and sample beers from multiple breweries from across Kansas. This will also be the first opportunity for the public to try our 2017 Glass Blown Ale “Slight Headwind Saison,” made in collaboration with Nate Doss and Valerie Jenkins of Bevel Craft Brewing!   3. A Musical Kaleidoscope

    Our final concert of the 2016-2017 season will finish with A Musical Kaleidoscope with a work commissioned by Dr. Gary Ziek, segments from La Boheme Che gelida manina and Si, mi chiamano Mimi sung by Dr. Scott Wichael. We will also be playing Hungarian Sketches by Bartok, Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte by Ravel, and Danzon No. 2 by Marquez. This takes us through many different styles of playing and color. This concert lineup will give any concert goer a new appreciation for music.

    Join Emporia State University, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas employees and thousands of other Kansans across the state April 26 for a 30-minute walk during lunch. We'll meet at noon at Union Square at Emporia State University for a walk on campus. The first 150 participants who stop by the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas table at the event will receive a free National Walk @ Lunch Day T-shirt.   7. SOS' Child Abuse Summit - Youth Suicide : Awareness, Risk Factors and Response

    April 27, 2017, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM @ Flint Hills Technical College

    Join us on April 27th for a Summit dedicated to engaging all key stakeholders in our community on how to protect and serve children and youth who are in harm's way.  We will be discussing youth suicide - being aware of warning signs, knowing the risk factors and what to do in response. The SOS annual Child Abuse Summit will take place at Flint Hills Technical School and will feature Dr. Barry N. Feldman, Director of Psychiatry Programs in Public Safety and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at UMass Medical School.  Dr. Feldman is nationally recognized as both an educator and researcher in suicide intervention and prevention, and will be speaking about youth suicide. The Summit is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, April 27 at Flint Hills Technical College. Cost is $40 which includes lunch, catered by Radius Brewing Company. Registration deadline is April 15, 2017.     The Humane Society of the Flint Hills and the Emporia Animal Shelter are holding a Dog Jog 5K fundraiser 10 a.m. April 29 on the Emporia State University campus. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and is $15; The first 50 entrants get a free T-shirt. This run or walk does not require a dog but pets on a leash are welcome. Three $50 Visa cards will be raffled at $5 a ticket. All proceeds from the Dog Jog will go to provide vaccinations and emergency veterinary care for the shelter animals.
